I went into The New Kingdom not knowing that this book was part of a series, which fortunately it can be read as a standalone. However, if you prefer, you might want to catch up on the previous 6 in the series.

I love all things mythology and recently have been very into Egyptian history. After watching nearly every documentary on Egypt available, it was great to dive into such a wonderfully written novel.

There was not a lot of character development or detailed plot, but enough to satisfy the reader who is primarily action-driven. Given that I haven't read the previous books of the series, I am unsure if these were previously established.

The New Kingdom read as though it were well-researched and historically accurate, which aided in setting the scene as the reader could rely on previous knowledge. The book being fiction did a great job blending historical information and meeting the gods of the time, for example.

Without giving anything away, The New Kingdom will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
