This was an interesting read. Even though Evan is obviously the main character, we the readers don't get a great feel for her by the end of the excerpt. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since the air of mystery in her character fits very well with the tone of the book so far. The plot is very interesting so far (that was a wonderful/terrible place to end the excerpt... I'm dying to read more!), and I really appreciate how it read like an action thriller in the 21st century (e.g. mentioning Twitter bots and racist slurs on social media).

One thing that perhaps the author could consider is that, when it comes to the introduction and introspection of the protagonist, Evan, the narration can start to feel a bit like an info-dump. This is especially so in the first few pages, when the readers are first meeting Evan. Because we are told these details about Evan, without getting the chance to experience them ourselves, there is little emotional weight associated with her backstory. I don't believe that a reader should immediately want to be best friends with the MC, but I do believe a reader should actually care about the MC, and part of that caring comes from emotional weight. The initial introductions of Butler and Brenda are wonderful; we get enough information to get a feel for the character through Evan's perspective and thoughts, so they feel much more "real" than Evan herself does.

Besides that, though, it seems like an exciting start to an interesting book! Thank you for the excerpt.
