Good story but too long and descriptive
Raised in a dysfunctional home, Tallulah leaves for California as soon as possible but finds it difficult to bond with others. When disaster strikes, she returns home to help her younger siblings. While there, what family secrets will she discover?
The story alternates between Tallulah's childhood (1958-1960s) and present day (1972-1974). Even though I liked Tallulah and felt for her dire situation, I had a difficult time getting into this book at first. It did pick up after awhile. Themes included mental illness, coming-of-age, violence, civil rights movement, Vietnam War, and a search for self. The author's writing style was very descriptive and unique but overall, I just didn't connect much with the story or the characters.
Location: 1960s and 1970s Mississippi
I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
