This novel paints a powerful picture of how four siblings deal with mental health issues, lack of parenting, small town mores, friendship, family pride, and much more. Their devastating childhood leads Tallulah to internalize her feelings almost to the point of paralysis, Griff to physically leave the source of his troubled life, Walden to seek refuge in the safety and comfort of a cult, and Dharma to dance her way into denial. The siblings' only stability is Gran, who has secrets and demons of her own. She is a strong woman, who tries to maintain her family's status despite small town gossip and derision. The title is especially telling as each character learns that there are no promises of happiness (eternal summer) and that your life is yours to control. A wonderful story that would provoke a good discussion on nature vs. nurture.
