Normally, a work of fiction with a cast of characters at the beginning is cause for alarm for me, but I was proven wrong in this case. This is an elegant work of historical fiction that makes the period it's about come alive, as good historical fiction should. In the space of a few pages, the author is able to create a main character who is relatable and interesting. It is because of this that the journey of the Mayflower, an event that is typically seen as far removed from our present time and therefore hard to be invested in, suddenly takes on a real, human quality. It is obvious that the author did her research to make the story ring true and thereby impart the weight of the reality behind it. My only (small) complaint the slightly modern tone of the prose. While period language would be dense and hard for the average reader to enjoy, just a few more key words and phrases would add to the overall authenticity of the novel. Overall this is an impressive piece that doesn't forgo the historical in favor of the fiction.
