One thing Alex Michaelides does is final shocking twists in his books. In The Silent Patient, the twist is what made the book for me. With The Maidens, I'm not so sure. I enjoyed the story, the main character, the setting. Mariana was likable and interesting. All the red herrings thrown your way keep you on your toes. But the final twist fell a little bit flat for me this time. Like perhaps it wasn't set up quite well enough. In The Silent Patient, the twist was set up so well throughout the whole book. In this, it felt thrown in at the end, and had my brow drawn in a bit of confusion.
One thing I find funny when reading thrillers is how the author tries to get the main character involved in the investigation, and this one toed the line of being a bit silly. She wasn't a reporter, PI, family member of a victim or anything. She's a group therapist and her niece's friend from collage is murdered so she dives into following people, asking questions, sticking her nose in police business against their wishes..
Overall it is a solid read, and I flew through it pretty quickly.
