Slow start, disappointing twist

The story follows psychotherapist Mariana as she tries to solve the murders of members of a secret society that continue to happen at her niece Zoe's university.

I enjoyed The Silent Patient so was excited to dive into Michaelides sophomore book, but unfortunately it fell flat for me. The beginning is slow as it details Mariana's grief and her group therapy practice, and you're constantly waiting for something to happen. The second half picks up as you try and figure out who is responsible for the murders and how to find evidence to corroborate, but then the final twist/reveal was rushed and disappointing.

There are short chapters which make this easy to get through, and I was intrigued by the Greek mythology components. I also liked seeing how Mariana processed things through her therapist lens, though I don't think her group therapy piece added much to the story. I didn't really like the characters, and while I appreciated The Silent Patient Easter eggs, I felt like some components were too similar in the story (therapy angle, creepy men lurking in trees).

I know this one is highly anticipated and I've seen mixed reviews across the board so if you're interested I'd still recommend checking it out and enjoying the ride, especially if you like Greek mythology.

Thank you Celadon Books for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
