I seem to be striking out on all my anticipated reads this year. The Maidens received a huge promotion push all over Bookstagram, which moved it higher up my TBR list. While I was a fan of Michaelides' debut, I was not as impressed with this one.

What I did like: the Greek tragedy references. That, to me, was the most interesting part of the book.

Fred. He was the most likable character and when something bad happened to him, it made me sad.

The references to The Silent Patient. It was kind of a surprise to see how the two books related in the Michaelides universe.

What I did not like: everything else. This book was not good. It felt like absolutely nothing happened, even when people started dying. I did not care for Mariana or Edward Fosca or the Maidens. For being the title characters, they were just a gimmick. A storyline dealing with Mariana and one of her group therapy patients was unnecessary and added nothing.

And that ending. Ugh. A weird murder plot that was planned for some reason that did not even matter anymore.

While this book was a disappointment, I will read the author's next book and hope he finds his groove again.
