When I heard the author of one of my favorite psychological thrillers was back with another book, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I saw some reviews for this and was worried it wasn’t going to meet my expectations, but boy was I wrong. This was another five star read for me. Michaelides does it again!

This is the story of group therapist, Mariana, recently widowed from her love, Sebastian. She gets a call from their niece Zoe who asks Mariana to come to Cambridge University where one of her close friends has been murdered.

Mariana goes to Cambridge and attempts to unravel the mystery of The Maidens, a group of girls that seem like a cult following of one of the professors, Edward Fosca.

Everything about this thriller was done well. The writing style, the short chapters, all the possible villains that leave you guessing, and also the snippets of the murderer’s journal interspersed along the way. The clues build and quite frankly I knew nothing until it was revealed by Michaelides at the end, and that is my favorite kind of thriller. The Greek mythology angle works. I also love how Theo from the Silent Patient makes a cameo.
