Mariana, a Cambridge graduate, is drawn back to her alma mater when a friend of her niece is murdered. While her initial goal was to just visit her niece in order to offer her mental support Mariana ends up staying on campus when additional women are found murdered. Mariana becomes obsessed with solving the crimes even when it appears that her own life might be in danger.

I was in the minority when The Silent Patient was published and found it to be just an average book. While I did like The Maidens more than the Silent Patient I still found there to be several plot holes. I liked Mariana as a character and felt that her background in psychology and the death of her husband made the plot more interesting. I also enjoyed the plot twists and turns but ultimately I felt the unveiling of the killer to be a slight let down as I had rightfully guessed the culprit in the beginning and would have liked a different outcome.
