Alex Michaelides knows how to tell a good story, and The Maidens is no exception. Mariana, the main character, is a group therapist. Her husband, Sebastian, died about a year ago, and Mariana, troubled and lonely, continues to grieve his loss. The only person left who matters to Mariana is her niece, Zoe. A recent violent, brutal murder of Zoe’s friend is the catalyst that brings Mariana to St. Christopher’s College in Cambridge, England. Enter Mariana’s number one suspect, charismatic, American, Professor Edward Fosca and his young, female followers, known as The Maidens.

This was an atmospheric mystery with a variety of creepy characters that drew me in from the first page. The ending fell a little flat for me, and although I like epilogues this one went a step too far, adding a bit of unnecessary confusion. I loved The Silent Patient and a couple of the characters from that book appear in this one. Definitely worth the read despite the ending.
