"That was the horror of it. We all secretly hope that tragedy will only ever happen to other people."

I'm honestly not quite sure how I feel about this book. The Maidens is the second psychological thriller novel by Alex Michaelides after his bestseller, The Silent Patient. It takes place in the same "world" as The Silent Patient although seemingly before it, based on the few references made to characters from his first book. The Maidens is just as well written. Michaelides has a way of writing that completely draws me in. I thought that I'd read this book over the course of a week but was finished with it in less than 48 hours. I could not put it down.

The problem with thrillers is, if you don't like the ending, it kind of sours the taste of the whole book for you. While I'm not convinced I didn't like the ending, I just didn't love it. I will say it definitely surprised me though. I had some suspicions towards how it would end and while I slightly guessed part of the ending, the overall ending had me literally exclaiming "what?! no way, what??" outloud to myself on the couch as I read. Which is what you want in a good twist. Therefore, I definitely recommend The Maidens for a fun, engrossing weekend read. It'll be best if you go into it without any expectations
