Both Mariana and her niece, Zoe know that Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder of Zoe's troubled college friend, but they can't prove it or even get the authorities to seriously investigate. Fosca, the young Greek Tragedy professor at Cambridge University, where Zoe is a student, is beloved by his students and the heartthrob of many of the female ones.

Rarely does a novel leave me speechless, but this one did. This is the best book I have read in decades. I would describe it as a "brainy mystery" in the style of those by Umberto Eco. In fact, no novel since Eco's Foucault's Pendulum has enraptured me so much. (Since I read that in the 1980s, that tells you how often a book like this comes around. If you are expecting anything like The Silent Patient, adjust your expectations. While I liked the author's first book, I didn't love it and this book is so different.

I loved the literary quotes at the beginning of each section. They were very well chosen and added to the suspense. I had to go back and reread the Tennyson poem referred to in Part 1. The author just kept pulling me in and making me want more. You have to read this book!
