If you completely deceived me, I’d be pretty angry with you. When Alex Michaelides does it, I sing his praises. 🤷‍♀️

This story begins by telling us that Edward Fosca is a murderer. Mariana is sure of it and she must figure out how to prove it. But, who is Edward Fosca? We find out soon enough.

Mariana works as a group therapist and she, like Michaelides’ MC in The Silent Patient, is no stranger to the pain of a troubled childhood. Her niece, Zoe, has seen her fair share of misery as well and when she calls Mariana to say she believes her friend has been murdered, Mariana is quick to go console her.

Trouble ensues.

Admittedly, I wasn’t completely captivated from the start, which was different from my experience with Michaelides’ debut. While the story was always enjoyable, it wasn’t really until the last third of the book that I found it unputdownable. It was completely worth the time invested and Michaelides seamlessly stitched a shocking conclusion together that was horrendous yet, somehow, so logical.

I never saw it coming and that’s what made this especially satisfying. I love a good mystery that I can’t figure out and one that doesn’t reek of rancid absurdities as it concludes. Both components are often difficult for me to find. This was dark and distressing, but the pieces all fit. I really appreciated that. Additionally, Michaelides threw in a fun little surprise for his readers, and that was really cool.

I’m never sure how many books we need to read before we can declare someone as a favorite author, but two seems like a fair number. Let me shout it out so everyone can hear me: ALEX MICHAELIDES IS OFFICIALLY ON MY FAVORITE AUTHORS LIST! I think he is a very smart, perceptive writer with some incredibly creative twists up his sleeve. The Maidens was a book I’d been anticipating for a long time and I’m elated to say that it was well-worth the wait.

Is it too early to ask when we can expect his next book? I know, I know. You can’t rush perfection.
