I absolutely loved the Silent Patient (and never saw the ending coming), so when I saw that Alex Michaelides was writing another book, it went right to the top of my to-read list.
The Maidens had a bit of a slower start, and I had a hard time with Mariana as a main character. For some reason, her voice did not seem as clear initially—though that may have been a purposeful choice, as she was very obviously working through grief throughout the novel. I hated some of the choices she made, but that’s to be expected; I often have a deeper reaction and response to a book when I don’t agree with the main character’s actions. But it was a good suspenseful story that I wanted to keep reading!
Again, the author threw a crazy twist in at the ending, and I hope he continues to do so because I’ll be expecting it in future books of his. This one I did see coming a little bit, but the explanation and payoff was amazing. Another wonderful read from Alex Michaelides!
