The first thing I generally notice about any book I read is how long the chapters are. Seeing that the chapters in THE MAIDENS are so short tells me it will keep my attention pretty easily and will be a fast-paced read. I want to know who killed Mariana's love interest. My only qualm, however, is that Mariana sent Henry away without calling for help. He should have been admitted to a hospital to undergo mental health treatment immediately due to self-harm.
