The start of The Maidens doesn't go full bore into trying to unmask a murderer, which is good, because instead it builds motivation. Mariana is suffering multiple emotional traumas which puts her in a prime position to fixate on someone causing trauma to others. I wish the preview had been longer to start delving into her investigation, but I like the way the book starts.
