Unfortunately, this book was not for me. The low rating reflects how I felt about it, not the quality of the book itself.
The pace was a little too slow for my liking, writing was detailed and complex, which could be a great thing for this genre but ultimately did not work for me personally. I wanted more activity and movement. I personally liked the second part way more and the flow was more organic. There was drama added to the mix and the story felt alive.
I liked the family saga way of storytelling, but there was no one to root for. I did not feel an attachment to any of the characters and when you read about family history, you want to have a special connection with someone on the page.
The book is long and often readers like it this way, it is easier to imagine things when we have detailed descriptions. I would say if this is your thing, this book would work for you. For me, they felt a bit too dry and lacked emotion in the descriptions.
The book is great for what it is, and the author is clearly very talented, it just wasn't a hit for me.
