I love how this book opens up with a telling rather than a showing of several years without being overhanded or boring. Rather, it emulates how quickly real life passes, from childhood to adulthood without even realizing it, and without the emotional or psychological ability to adjust properly. What happens when one is able to catch one's breath and focus on something (in this case, having another child) appears to be the crux of the story.
