A too-strong premise for the quality of its execution.

The setting is a place called Outpost and our main character Poe Blythe is seventeen years old and the captain of a dredge ship, which is designed to collect gold from rivers. Really cool stuff! I wish there'd been more of this sort of world-building, but my overall impression of this universe is that it's lacking.

I thought Poe was pretty cool, though. River raiders killed her boyfriend Call so she's vengeful and angry and ridden with grief; she's not consumed by these emotions though, and the book is in part about her healing from her loss. The voyage, not too subtly, isn't just about a ship sailing over waters.

It's a good thing I like Poe, because the book focuses heavily on her, and I really didn't care for any of the other characters.
