This book was just okay for me. While I really loved Poe's journey from mindless revenge to compassionate understanding for others, I still needed more. I was initially drawn in by her ruthless, single-minded goal of needing to destroy those who took her one love away. She was a fantastic character. I loved how she trusted no one and therefore every other character was thoroughly suspect to both her and the reader. Throughout the book, I enjoyed her all the more. But there wasn't enough background story and not enough about the environment and supporting characters to hold the book up. Poe was a great character, but everything else was way too flat. I was hoping at some point to find out where we were, or even what time we were, is this a dystopic future, or alternate universe, or just plain fantasy land? What about the history of this place? Why are we here? Why are these two factions against each other? Why are these characters doing what they're doing? Why did he do this? Why did she do that? Who really knows anything around here?? There were just too many questions, not enough answers, and not enough substance for me to truly love this book. It was a fun read that I blazed through, but I don't think I'd add it to a favorites shelf anytime soon.
