It’s been a long time since I’ve read a young adult novel. I am so impressed by how far this genre has come since I was a youth. I cannot recall ever reading a story as dark and dystopian as THE LAST VOYAGE OF POE BLYTHE when I was growing up. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop; I finished the book in one sitting. The story was fast-paced, easy to read, and very addicting.

The story takes place on a ship called the Lily. People from a place called the Outpost use the Lily to mine gold out of rivers. Seventeen-year-old Poe Blythe has been made captain of the Lily for its last voyage because she was the one who designed armor to protect the ship from intruders (people called Raiders) looking to steal gold. Poe’s armor has killed a lot of Raiders, which makes Poe happy because the Raiders killed the love of her life, and she has been laser-focused on getting revenge ever since.

As Poe and her crew embark on their final journey, the Raiders find a loophole to board the ship (or maybe there was a saboteur in her crew). I can’t say anymore without giving any spoilers away, but all the death, destruction, greed, and revenge made this a really fascinating read that I highly recommend.
