Read this if…you are interested in the history of slavery in America and/or like the idea of a dysfunctional family solving mysteries together.

I’m going to be totally honest here and say that I would never have picked this book up for myself. However, I am so glad it found its way to me because I thoroughly enjoyed it. It starts off with a lot of action, and then slows down a bit while the investigation gets going. There are a lot of characters and I did find myself getting them mixed up at first. The author has a unique writing style where he doesn’t write in complete sentences, so it took me a bit to get used to that. Once I was in the thick of the story though, I was hooked.

The dialect is written perfectly so I could hear those thick southern drawls perfectly and the mystery itself (based on actual history-make sure to read the notes at the end!) was fascinating. I loved the family detective agency, headed by a strong matriarch. I can confidently recommend this to fans of gothic southern tales.
