Savannah--an old romantic city with both written and unwritten history, high society and low society, old money and no money, ghost tours and phantoms of the past. All of these opposite elements converge in "The Kingdoms of Savannah". A murder, a mysterious disappearance, criminals, a fractured society family, and a deeply hidden community all tie together by the end.

The wide variety of the well-drawn characters and their interwoven relationships was my favorite part of this novel. The mystery of the missing person ran throughout, ratcheting up along the way. The ending was not a fairy-tale-come- true type but was very fitting for the characters and the storyline.

The previously unknown (to me) true history of the founders and origins of Savannah, revealed in the Historical Notes at the end of the book, lent an undeniable truth to the novel. This moody book will stay with me for a long time.
