Film Noir
This book gave me very film noir vibes. As it is my favorite genre of film I was very eager to finish reading the book. It reminded me quite a bit of the movie the Devil in a Blue Dress as it also involves a murder being investigated by a detective which ultimately reveals racial tensions and class systems in place. I also like how bits of history were interspersed with the modern day mystery. Also the characters had both good and bad qualities. As a mystery I like the pacing and it really does keep you wanting to know who the committed the murder.
I wish that the book was paced a little faster and had a better hook. It took a while for me to become intrigued and the first part felt a little clunky. Apparently quite a few of the author's movies have been turned into screenplay for film and I look forward to watching them. I can also see this book being turned into screenplay.
