Thank you Bookishfirst for the advanced copy of The Kingdoms of Savannah by George Dawes Green in return for an honest review.

The story is interesting, the setting descriptions extraordinary, but there were just too many characters to keep track of, and that detracted from the story. There was a lot going on in this gritty tale about the Savannah haves and have nots and I found the story confusing at times. Chapters were too long, making it difficult to find a place to stop reading for the night, and then having to flip back the next morning in order to refresh as to where I paused in the story.

The author expertly described Savannah, the elegant homes, old money, the surrounding beauty rich with history, and then shockingly juxtaposed this wealth, prestige and stateliness against the poverty and homelessness generally not associated with Savannah. It was very effective. The author painted such clear pictures with his words making this reader rightfully uncomfortable when confronted with such disparity. .

This is a very thought-provoking novel, one that stays with you long after the last page is read, I have no doubt that there will be quite a following for this book, but for me, it was just too dark.
