The story was just okay. Marie Lu's writing was well done but there were some pacing issues at times.
What I liked: It was really wonderful to see how passionate the main character was about her craft and how much she loved music. It was also interesting to see that sometimes having a strong love of something is not always healthy and can lead someone down a regrettable path. I liked the message that fame and immortality are not often worth it.
What I did not like: At times the story fell flat and it felt like there was no forward momentum. The characters lacked depth and did not show enough growth throughout the novel in my opinion. Some characters felt like there were there only for convenience and did not contribute to the story. The ending also felt forced and abrupt as time jumps 25 years in the epilogue.
