Marie Lu’s YA Historical fantasy, The Kingdom of Back, is beautifully crafted. Going in I knew very little about Mozart, however we learn that the book focuses on his sister. The way Marie Lu crafts the real life and fantasy in this book is wonderful. During the intense parts of the book I felt like the words were flowing like Mozart’s music. I also enjoyed the references to Mozart’s work that were sprinkled throughout, wether it was his opera Don Giovanni or The Magic Flute. These references are so light that someone who knows nothing about his works or life can read and enjoy the book. The other enjoyable thing about this book is the female strength and the way you are rooting for Nannerl through the whole book.
