The Kingdom of Back wasn’t quite what I expected. I knew that there would be a magical world and the Mozart children but I envisioned this story unfolding a bit differently.

The book started off well but unfortunately I didn’t find myself connecting with the story of the magical kingdom itself. There were beautiful and interesting descriptions of the kingdom but I wasn’t pulled into the fantasy elements of this book. Instead, I found myself fascinated by Nannerl’s daily struggle to be acknowledged in a society that did not fully appreciate her talents as a pianist and composer because she was a girl. Marie Lu has created a complex character with a lot of growth in Nannerl. It was interesting to read about a character who was timid in so many ways but extremely strong in others. The expectations of her father and her relationship with her brother were what ultimately drew me into this book because I wanted to know what Nannerl would do next. I just wished I could have gotten into the fantasy of The Kingdom of Back more but overall this was an enjoyable read.
