Somehow I totally missed the boat on Marie Lu when Legend came out in 2011. I read it only just back in September of this year and it was clear right away that she’s an incredibly talented YA writer. Given this is a story written prior to her first publication, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it veers into the realm of historical fantasy over her typical science-fiction/dystopian genre. I cashed in all my points before even reading the First Look because I needed to get ahold of this one before the slated March 2020 release.

I mentioned this on Goodreads, but the cover reminds me SO much of the magic tree from the movie Avatar. I’m curious to find out more about its significance. The glimpse we’ve been given so far at the magical Kingdom of Back seems to be incredibly promising. Lu’s writing in this standalone feels so different from the Legend series. It’s elegant and lyrical as opposed to the gritty suspense and action of the Republic.

I don’t know much about Wolfgang Mozart and I have zero knowledge of his sister, Maria Anna. These first few chapters have made me hungry for more information about their family and leaves me anxiously awaiting the full ARC in the mail!
