I read an early except of this book and the opening fascinated me. It was so well crafted. However knowing it's the first in a duet or trilogy daunted me, and tested my resolve. It took me a lot longer than I would've liked to pick up the book. I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. The promise the book showed in that excerpt, it totally delivered on.

I love how Natalie Mae slowly unrolled the world and how it worked, the world building was subtle but very well done. I also loved Zahru. She may be someone who is overlooked by those with "superior magic", but she's kind and caring, even at the cost of her herself and what she wishes. I love how complex the characters are. It certainly makes you think.

The story is fast paced and full of so many unexpected revelations. While they all made my heart race, I loved every single one of them. I also loved the moment I realized what the title meant. I absolutely can not wait to read The Cruelest Mercy, because the ending and epilogue are so unexpected. I am looking forward to seeing Zahru, and where this new turn takes her.
