What an Ending
You know when you read a novel and when you close it you know you really liked it but just can’t pinpoint why? That was this book for me. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. I just can’t for the life of me pinpoint one specific area that stands out enough to be the reason I liked it. I just wholly liked it!
- The royal rivalry for the crown.
- The flawed nature of all of the characters,
- The underlying messages of doing what is needed and not what you want.
- The power of understanding.
- The magic system.
- The simplistic world-building.
- The morally grey character that you still feel for.
That ending! This is basically character driven and Mae definitely drives these characters hard. I honestly sat there and expected so many different scenarios as things unraveled. She had me overthinking and underthinking a ton and I loved every second of it.
There are tons of reviews for this novel out there and since I landed an arc for book 2, I wanted to get this copy on my shelf read in preparation. I am not disappointed and recommend young adult fantasy lovers who enjoy character-based trials to read this one.
