I had high hopes for this! A race for a crown with a deadly end!
In a world where every one is a magic user (or else is banished), Zahru wants more from her animal-tending life. And when it comes time to crown the next ruler, she and her friend sneak into the palace. Only problem- she accidentally gets put in the competitors section and the very paranoid prince decides to choose her as the race's sacrifice, yikes!
The race has Zahru slingshotting between all three potential rulers. At first she wants to escape (of course since the race ends in her death), but while traveling she becomes close with each of the heirs. With the two male heirs, she develops romantic feelings for both of them. It is her indecisiveness, passiveness, and inaction that caused me to dislike this book. Give me a heroine with some fight in her!
