A subpar YA fantasy

3.5 respectively.

You all know the synopsis so I can slip over that. What I liked about this book was Zahru's inner monologue. It's not often I laugh out loud at books, but her sarcasm and snark were top notch. She's my kind of girl. But sass aside, she's a strong female protagonist who just wanted some chocolate and ended being a human sacrifice. The supporting cast was also fun, especially spunky Sakira who just wants to drink and party.

Kasta got me all tingly. I have zero shame and zero chill when it comes to murderous, shirtless bad boys so whatever.

What I did not like was that the story felt convoluted. There's so much going on in this book that part of my brain was trying to boil the plot down to a cool horse race, but couldn't. There's this complicated race and then there's the threat of war that pops up (I mean, we all knew it was going there. It's a YA fantasy after-all) but it didn't seem fleshed out enough for me to care by the end.

All in all, this was an entertaining read that started out strong and lost me by the second half.
