Natalie Rae's debut novel, The Kinder Poison is filled with adventure and magic. The story follows Zahru, who finds herself stuck in the middle of a competition between royal siblings fighting to become the next heir. Zahru is chosen to be the human sacrifice in the Crossing, a race across the desert where the winner must take the life of a human sacrifice to become heir to the throne and obtain new magic.
The characters in this story were enjoyable to get to know. They all have interesting background stories, motives, and personalities and I am excited to see where their journey takes them next. I also liked learning about the magic system, although it did get a little confusing since there are so many different types of powers. There is some romance in the book that looks like it will be a love triangle. I am not a huge fan of love triangles, but curious where this will go.
