What a start! I’ll begin with saying that the main character has a strong and unique voice. She is funny and clever, but most of all I feel that I really get to know her as I read. She is distinct and very much her own person. The characterization is excellent. The story itself is very exciting. I love a good fantasy contest, and it is clear there will be much more controversy to come Because they have reinstated a dangerous contest AND a human sacrifice. Although the part about everything going exactly wrong for her if fairly expected and predictable given that it is her story and the is foreboding from the beginning, it is clear that this book is going to be an exciting adventure. I’m honestly already hooked and definitely want more!
This excerpt was a little longer than usual but it went so quickly because the story pulls you in from the first. The magic system is complex and I cannot wait to hear more. Moreover, it seems clear there will be some sort of romance coming out of this. I especially find her ex Gallup’s repugnant so I hope she ends up with a prince. I seriously identify fo much with her charming ability to wander into situations she doesn’t fully understand. I can’t wait!
