Not entirely sure how I felt about this one...

This novel centers around Alice Vega and her partner, Cap, who are enlisted to help identify who two Jane Does are that have turned up dead, as well as to help stop a suspected human trafficking ring. Upon reading a "first look" of this book, it sounded like an intriguing story that was going to delve into a dark underworld of trafficking and possibly drug cartels.

Once I received the book and was able to read it in its entirety, I was somewhat underwhelmed. While it did delve into the topics I suspected, it was not quite the "mystery" that I anticipated. The story did not dive as deep as I expected, though there were a few interesting twists and turns.

I also did not initially realize that Alice was a bounty hunter, so I found myself rolling my eyes a bit, as her actions and strength seemed very unrealistic to me. Once I realized that she's supposed to be a bounty hunter, it made a bit more sense, though I still don't know if it was believable.

While there was definitely some action in the book, overall it moved a little slow and fell a little flat for me. There were some characters whom I really wanted to know more about and their stories never developed the way I had hoped. I did not feel a connection to the main characters at all. There were also some more minor plot points that I felt I wasn't following too well - it just seemed to be a bit disjointed and lacking a smooth flow throughout. I do expect that someone else could read the book and feel entirely differently than I do.

I did enjoy the relationship between Cap and his daughter Nell and would have loved to see more of that in the book, though I understand that the story didn't call for or allow it.

Another thing that I did really like is that while this was a "follow up" to the first book featuring Alice Vega, there was nothing in this book that would require you to read the other one first. While a few things were alluded to that clearly happened in the first book, it really had little to no impact on this story, so this book could definitely be read independently without any issues.
