The Janes is the second book in the Alice Vega crime series and can be read as a stand-alone. Louisa Luna provides enough contextual information in this second installment to introduce characters to new readers but to still continue development arcs for veteran fans. Relative to genre, the story reads as any other well written police procedural. Luna does not offer any overt suspense or intense trepidation. Overall, the trope is somewhat familiar but as with most good crime series Luna produces excellent characters bound to create a fan base. Her cast has been deftly created and carry the story line well, each offer her readers a tangible presence within the plot. While the main character, Alice Vega, is developed as a strong, determined private investigator, the author does well to show a more personable, witty, and charismatic side to her as well.
