The Janes starts as an investigation into the mysterious deaths of two young Jane Does by Alice Vega and her unofficial partner Max Caplan and quickly spins into a deeper, more complicated web of trafficking, Mexican cartels and double-crossing. The characters are enjoyable enough, with Vega and Cap having their unspoken but deep connection - rounded out by the joyous ME Mia, and cops McTiernan and Otero. At times it felt like the book got too complicated to me, and a major climax in the book occurs at the halfway point. Then down and down the rabbit hole (or Mexican trafficking tunnel) you kept going as the web spins out further and further. While I certainly like mystery/thriller novels where a strong female is the main character, it does seem like they all fit the same typecast - smart, unemotional, not trusting, and one step ahead of the bad guys most of the time. The story does have an interesting twist at the end, one that of course Vega sees that nobody else does.
