I decided to check this book out because the summary sounded interesting and that's exactly what I got.
Since the excerpt is short, we really only get to see how Alice Vega gets called in by the police in California to help in the case of two dead girls, who are believed to be part of a trafficking ring. It seems to be a very typical Mexican (my assumption based on location, the mention of "Chiapas", and the Mexican names even though the author continually says Latino/a) storyline of drug cartels and sex trafficking, except that it's from the perspective of the detective.
Aside from the fact the author keeps using the term "Latino/a" to describe a lot of the characters (why? it feels unnatural to me), I don't really have any real complaints.
