Based on her award winning podcast, Lauren Shippen takes The Bright Sessions past the session with Dr. Bright. In The Infinite Noise we meet Caleb Michaels, a 16 year old running back who begins to experience unpredictable mood swings. After meeting Dr. Bright, Caleb finds out that he's an Atypical, or an individual with enhanced abilities. His ability is extreme empathy, he can feel the feelings of other people around him. When he's pulled into one of his classmate's emotional orbits, Caleb doesn't know how to describe it, but Adam's emotions fit with Caleb's in a way he can't describe. With some encouragement from Dr. Bright, Caleb befriends Adam, and together they learn so much more about each other and Atypicals.

I really loved this book. It was so much fun, and I swear I spent the whole time with a smile on my face. I really want to listen to the podcast, The Bright Sessions, now! The main focus is the relationship that develops between Adam and Caleb, as well as Caleb figuring out how to deal with his abilities. Towards the end, we see there may be a nefarious faction that wants to experiment and weaponize Atypicals somehow. I'm hoping this will be addressed more in the second book.

The depiction of depression in this book was really well done. I feel like I understand it a lot more now. I also liked that when Adam would sink into a depressive episode, being in a relationship with Caleb didn't magically fix it. I feel like that's something that is portrayed a lot and it's not true. Overall, this was truly amazing and a captivating read.
