MINOR SPOILERS: As it's most basic this book is a love story between Caleb, a varsity football player, and Adam, a shy studious student. They are both high school juniors at the beginning of the novel. This sounds like a sterotypical, gay love story, but The Infinite Noise has some twists. Caleb is also an empath (a person who can see and feel other's emotions). He is drawn to Adam (who has some challenges of his own) because Adam is a calming presence in Caleb's otherwise overwhelming emotional experience. It takes time for them to realize they have a love connection, and the story is a believable representation of a first young adult relationship.

This story also has some sci-fi or fantasy elements that make it more than a high school love story. As we explore Caleb's life as an empath, we are introduced to other characters with other extraordinary abilities. This leads to an element of danger and a conflict with some important people in Adam and Caleb's lives. To me, this sub-plot seemed unnecessary to the story, but as I learned more about this book I found that is is based on a podcast called "The Bright Sessions". I can only assume more books are coming, based on the podcast, that will elaborate on this story.

Overall, this was a solid read for a young adult or even an adult like myself as long as you are comfortable with a gay male love story.
