COMING SOON: SEPTEMBER, 2019

“Caleb Michaels is a sixteen-year-old champion running back who develops the ability to experience the emotions of everyone around him. Caleb is an empath, and his therapist, Dr. Bright, is used to patients like him. Patients with enhanced abilities. Atypicals. She encourages him to explore his connection with a classmate, Adam, whose emotions feel... right.”

I just finished this one today and felt the need to post the review right away. Let me start off by saying that, like the main character, I am also an empath. The book definitely adds more drama to what it means to be an empath and sort of puts an “X-Men” spin on things, which isn’t necessarily true. Essentially an empath has a sixth sense where they absorb energy and feelings that others are experiencing. I could totally relate to Caleb’s feeling of being overwhelmed when he was around certain people- I actually spent a good deal of time avoiding draining people until I learned how to deal with it. Personally, I use a lot of crystal healing to protect my own energy from what others might be feeling. My favorites are black tourmaline and amethyst, but recently I’ve loved wearing garnet as well. I love the idea of a book being dedicated to feelings, especially that of empathy. I felt like Caleb’s unique ability gave him the perfect voice to show teens how others mask their feelings (or at least try to). I also like that the two main characters form a unique relationship that starts one way and ends in another. I do wish that there was more development around the other big character, Adam. Adam clearly deals with depression, and I think this book could have been a great platform to open that discussion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There’s apparently a podcast called The Bright Sessions that follows a group of therapy patients (from the looks of the website, Caleb is one of the characters). I wonder if Adam gets focus on the podcast.
