Synopsis:

“If you knew the date of your death, how would you live your life?”

In 1969, the four Gold children visit a fortune teller in her New York apartment. They are there to see if the rumors are true. According to the gossip, the fortune teller can tell them the exact date of their death. What they learn that hot summer day dictates how the children choose to live the next years of their lives.

Thoughts:

4.5 Stars– I wanted to read this book from the moment I read the line I quoted under the synopsis. So when I won the raffle in exchange for a review, I anxiously awaited the arrival of the book. It was well worth the wait!

Chloe Benjamin does a wonderful job of drawing you in quickly. In the prologue all four of the children find out the dates of their death. From there the book is broken into sections about each of the Gold children taking us through their lives. Each sibling is so different, their choices making them all compelling in their own right. Yet their connection is strong. Each section brings the siblings together in some way– whether in present or in memories.

The writing is beautiful and I found myself having to put the book down at times to let things sink in. I wanted to make sure I missed nothing because I felt that it all mattered. What Benjamin does so well is how she writes about each sibling. Each sibling has their own voice. And not just on the surface. In every aspect of their lives, the Gold children are unique and not in some unbelievable way. Their struggles, happiness, anger, love, and pain made me want to just comfort them. My empathy for them was real and I can honestly say I will be thinking about this book and these characters for a long, long time. I also plan on making anyone who will listen read this book.

Thank you again to Bookish First and Penguin Random House for an advanced copy of The Immortalists. I highly recommend this book and will be watching for any future book written by Benjamin.
