The book starts off grippingly with four adolescent siblings living in New York in 1969. The descriptions between life and times during this era is painted clearly and with intention. There is an obvious tension between the siblings, their roles during the time period and their ages. The oldest brother discovers a rumor concerning a gypsy type woman who can foreshadow the day of a persons death. The four children sneak out and get their predictions, secretly. This creates even more drama and tension between the siblings.
The story is well written and wraps the reader into the lives of the four children. The issue I have is the book doesn't seem to go anywhere. The children grow up and the dad dies and one of the brothers is homosexual and two siblings are going to college and one more is not. It just seems like the book isn't going anywhere and slowly.
