Oh my goodness. I don't think I've read a book this good since FATES AND FURIES by Lauren Groff. Like Groff's book, when I put the book down, I needed to pick it back up again to re-read the ending and think not only of the characters' lives, but my own and how maybe I can approach my life in a more positive way thanks to these characters' examples.

The story follows the Gold children, Varya, Daniel, Klara, and Simon, who as kids decided to meet a psychic gifted with the ability to tell people the exact day they will die. With this knowledge, they grow up leading lives that show the inevitability of fate...or is it?

Each character approaches their death date in a unique way and will pull any reader in and not let go until the last page. I usually don't read a 500 page book in 5 days, but the writing was that engaging! Chloe Benjamin weaves an absolutely brilliant tale of life, death, and the decisions we make in between. She fleshes out her characters brilliantly and uses significant time periods as her stage. It's all clearly well thought out.

I'm not going to say that if you liked FATES AND FURIES, you'll like this one. Neither book is compared to the other. They're both incredibly unique. However, if you like literary fiction books with engaging characters and a story that will force you to reflect on your life, then this is the book for you.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who's a fan of Lauren Groff, Column McCann, or Brit Bennet. I'd also recommend this to literary and family life fiction readers.
