The Immortalists is a quirky novel of family and survival written by the very talented Chloe Benjamin. The Gold children are Varya, Daniel, Klara, and Simon, and Varya is the eldest, taking stock of her changing body and coming to terms with taking care of her younger siblings. When we first meet the pack, it's 1969 and the short bursts of characterizartion through alternating narrators make me feel like I'm following a more mature Lemony Snicket novel. Benjamin definitely evokes a sense of place and time, and I'm looking forward to how the predictions these Gold children get from the psychic woman unfold and dictate their futures.
