I wanted to enjoy this book and for parts of it, I did. This book is set in Orient, Long Island, New York and Ruthie is preparing for her summer by renting out the family home. They can’t afford it otherwise. The description also asked if Ruthie’s renter was out for not only Ruthie’s home, but her life as well. Well, all that sounded very interesting to me. But then, the book veered off of that and focused more on Ruthie’s job and then threw in what was, in my opinion only, a subplot that was totally irrelevant. I’m referring to the plot involving Doe. Also, I couldn’t help but notice the author felt it necessary to throw in three political digs which were totally unnecessary. The comments had absolutely nothing to do with the plot. Just like any celebrity or person who has a platform, authors should realize that there are readers on both sides or any political or social issue. My opinion is that you shouldn’t throw comments in just to make a point. If it had pertained go the plot, then fine. Once I kept reading and saw the semi irrelevant plot and the comments, it lost a star. However, the book did keep my interest enough for me to finish. The second half was a lot better. First read for me by this author.
