The Hiding Girl by Dorian Box is the story of Emily Calby, a twelve year old girl who watched the rape and murder of her mother and little sister in their home before it was set afire by two sick, evil men. The story follows Emily as she learns how to survive on the streets, defend herself, and seek justice against those who wronged her. She meets invaluable friends along the way and learns how to process all the terrible things that life has thrown at her.

This book was a highly entertaining read, and the found/mixed family elements were very heartwarming. I found Emily to be a very complex and believable character. I was impressed that as I read, I could believe she was only 12 for almost the entire book. However, the way that certain events take place in this book is just incredibly unlikely. I was unable to suspend my disbelief as so many things happened at just the right moment to solve various problems.

The plot is very fast-paced and action-packed, with sweet, honest moments that brought tears to my eyes. The writing is good, but nothing that blew my mind. Emily and Lucas are both wonderful characters, but the book as a whole had issues. It needed to work harder than it did to make all the pieces of the narrative fit together. The synopsis at the end for book 2 sounded even more far-fetched than the already incredibly unlikely events in the first book. I won't be picking up book 2, but found book 1 worth the read.

All in all, it was a solid read, but not a great one.
