Mixed feelings for The Hermes Protocol

The synopsis of THE HERMES PROTOCOL is really interesting and sounds like something that I'd enjoy. I have mixed feelings though after reading the sample First Impression. I'm a fan of science fiction and fantasy so this seems like it would be a good fit for me, but I didn't feel very pulled into the story. I'm wondering how the worldbuilding develops and if the characters are given more depth. This is not a book that I'd be likely to purchase without borrowing from the library first. I'm not loving what I'm seeing so far, but the premise is interesting enough that I'd probably still give it a chance.
